There was this one time…

Hamilton Beach Breakfast Sandwich Maker

…that I tried to get creative with a Hamilton Beach Breakfast Sandwich Maker…and it resulted in a failure of epic proportions.

Apparently, even though I bake like it’s my job (note the LIKE, wishful thinking) I conveniently forgot the fact that sugar burns.

Like, turns jet black and smokes up your new condo burns. The new condo that has no kitchen fan. And I also burned the bacon. So I’m sitting here in a haze of donut/bacon smoke. Good thing cigarettes don’t smell like this because, whoa.

On that note, I’d like to take a moment to say that I really hate cooking bacon. It always spits little oil droplets and burns the heck out of my fingers. WTF bacon?! I think the oven method is the way I need to go from now on. Which sounds more like a family planning practice than a method for cooking bacon but that’s neither here nor there.

Let me tell you how this went down. When my friends at Hamilton Beach offered to send me a breakfast sandwich maker to share with you fine folks, I was stoked. And while slapping some eggs and ham between an english muffin is all good and fun and all that, here at Butterlust we have a sugar problem. So of course, I instantly started brainstorming recipes for a sweet breakfast sandwich. The ultimate sweet breakfast item? DONUTS. Naturally.

Real talk, I’m really not a fan of savory foods for breakfast. I find myself gravitating towards things like cereal, yogurt or oatmeal (or ice cream) long before the thought of eggs even crosses my mind. So while I will eat a decked out, salty breakfast sandwich for dinner any day, I wanted to come up with something that could satisfy my early morning sweet tooth.

Enter the donut breakfast sandwich. Genius in theory, not so much in reality. The fantasy:  fluffy scrambled eggs and maple bacon sandwiched between two warm, toasty glazed donuts. A little sweet, a little salty, a whole lot of damn.

Enter Reality.

Hamilton Beach Breakfast Sandwich Maker

Burned. to. a. crisp.

But don’t let my failure deter you. This handy-dandy appliance will not go unloved in my kitchen. I’ll just stick to the basics from now on…

Who am I kidding? I’m already brainstorming ways to use the egg compartment for things like creme brulee waffles…or a toasted marshmallow fluffernutter sandwich. I’ll let you know how that goes…

In the meantime, enter to win your very own Hamilton Beach Breakfast Sandwich Maker. Keep it for yourself or give it to your favorite college freshman for his/her dorm room. Get up to seven chances to win by liking ButterlustBlog on Facebook, following on Twitter and tweeting about the giveaway.

Good luck!

Love the realism. You are too cute and creative. Also. I was converted long ago to cooking bacon in the oven. Doesn’t smell up your house, no splatter and easy cleanup! Here is the best step by step! http://www.ourbestbites.com/2010/04/quick-tip-cooking-bacon/
